Senate Bill 861 Dies on House Floor!

Texas Capitol: Senate Bill 861 died yesterday in a huge legislative battle that literally came down to the last minutes of floor debate in the Texas House of Representatives.

This bill would have, quite literally, reclassified our public schools, mental health centers, and many other agencies as juvenile justice agencies!

Then it would have taken the dangers of psychiatric labels and drugs to a whole new level by classifying kids who received mental health services, Child Protective Services (CPS) or who had unexcused school absences or removals from the classroom as “at risk” of juvenile delinquency!

In our view SB 861 was nothing more than a cold blooded attempt to spy on families, and then use the power of CPS and juvenile justice agencies to intimidate families into agreeing on using drugs and other psychiatric treatments.

In short, SB 861 was against everything we stand for.

The Texas Home School Coalition deserves special recognition for sharing our concerns and taking decisive action.  Their assistance was most appreciated.  We would also like to acknowledge the:

  • Parent Guidance Center, as well as the
  • League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC),
  • American Civil Liberties Union of Texas (ACLU),
  • Texas Health Freedom Coalition,
  • And numerous other groups who stood with us to oppose this bill.

There are a number of legislators who deserve our thanks especially Representative Jodie Laubenberg, who stuck her neck out and publicly announced her intent to kill this bill.

And last but not least, YOU, our supporters!  Thank you so much for your support, your calls, and your testimonies.

It is a privilege to work with you.  When push comes to shove, you always make the difference.  This is why your support of CCHR is truly legendary.
